The New York University women's tennis team closed out a weekend of competition on Sunday, March 23, at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, with a tough 7-0 loss to fifth-ranked Wesleyan University.
Despite the loss, the Violets showed resilience throughout the match, with several standout performances in both singles and doubles play.
"We had competitive matches throughout the lineup but Wesleyan played the bigger points a little better than we did," said head coach Horace Choy. "They didn't give us much and when we pressed, unforced errors went up."
The Violets dropped the first doubles two matches, but Hannah Chang and Norah Staunton delivered a strong performance at #3, securing a 6-1 win. Wesleyan ultimately earned the doubles point.
In singles, the Violets had some notable performances, especially from Jimena Menendez and Victoria Wang, who both pushed their opponents to three sets.
NYU return from Virginia after winning one of three matches against top-fifteen competition on the weekend.
"I think it was a good weekend to see the level of some top programs," said Choy. "We were right there with them and it showed us what we need to improve on for the rest of the season."
Next, the Violets will face Ithaca College on Sunday, March 30, at 1:00pm at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
