The New York University women's tennis team secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Case Western Reserve University in a match-up of University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents on Saturday, March 22, in Newport News, VA.
In doubles action, Isabella Hartman and Victoria Wang fought hard, but fell 7-6 (3) in the first match, while the Violets lost 6-1 at #2. However, the Violets rallied at #3 with Hannah Chang and Norah Staunton claiming a 6-1 victory, though NYU ultimately dropped the doubles point.
In singles, Jimena Menendez won 6-4, 7-5 at #1, and Hartman battled back after dropping the first set to secure a crucial win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at #2. Wang triumphed at #3, 6-0, 7-5.
The match came down to Siona Vallabhaneni, who secured a tough 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4 win to clinch the overall victory for the Violets.
"It was a great win for us, a typical UAA battle to the end," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Case won the doubles point in a tightly-contested first doubles match after we split 2 and 3. We got down 0-2 after their win at 5 singles, but wins by Jimena and Vic brought us to 2-2. Both continued their strong play from the fall, and Jimena is someone we have relied on match after match for four years. Isabella battled back after dropping the first set and closed out her match to get us to 3-3.
"It all came down to Siona's match, which was back and forth until the end," Choy added. "She gutted out a tough three-setter to earn us the win. I am very proud of the way they competed, especially after the disappointment of losing the doubles point."
Next, the Violets will face Wesleyan University on Sunday at 9:00am, also in Newport News.
