The NYU women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Johns Hopkins University on Friday, March 21, in Newport News, VA.
Despite a valiant effort, the Violets were unable to overcome their opponent in the non-conference match.
In doubles play, NYU's team of Isabella Hartman and Victoria Wang secured a strong 6-2 victory in the number one spot. However, the Violets faced challenges in the other two doubles matches, falling 4-6 at #2 and 6-7 (4) at #3, ultimately losing the doubles point.
In singles play, the Violets saw success at the top of the lineup. At #1, Jimena Menendez won a thrilling match, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
Hartman also picked up a victory at #2, triumphing 6-1, 6-4.
The Violets were unable to secure any additional wins, with Johns Hopkins claiming the remaining singles matches.
"We started slow and were too passive early, but we fought back, " said Head Coach Horace Choy. "Vic and Isabella's win at one was key, and while we had chances at two and three, we couldn't finish. Jimena's strong play continued, and Isabella battled from start to finish. We're prepared for another tough match tomorrow."
The Violets will look to bounce back as they take on a University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent, Case Western Reserve University, on Saturday at 10:00am, also in Newport News.
