The New York University men and women's golf teams started their spring seasons at the Jekyll Island Invitational hosted by Ogelthrope University on Friday, March 21. The men played at Pine Lakes Course (Jekyll Island, GA), and the women played at King & Price Golf Club (St. Simons Island, GA).
The men had a good day on the course, shooting a +3, finishing tied for sixth place. NYU had two players in the top 25 for the round.
Oscar Uribe and
Kevin Kim shot an even par on the day, landing tied for 16th in the standings. Both players carded three birdies.
Jomyuth Luangtana-anan contributed to the team, shooting a +1 after 18 holes. He landed tied for 34th place, and also added three birdies to help his score.
Ryan Leung was the last scoring golfer for the Violets, hitting a +2.
The women finished the day in eighth place, shooting a +31. The Violets had two players in the top 50 for the round.
Nalinda Wanikpun finished the day tied for 11th place. She ended her back nine with three birdies on holes 13, 14, and 16, giving her four total on the day.
Naomi Tan placed 33th after posting a +7 in the first round, including a birdie on hole 14.
Kelly Jing and
Tiya Chowdary hit +10 and +12, respectively, each recording a birdie.
"Very strong start for both programs," said Head Coach
Brad Johnson. "Overall, the teams played incredibly. But, huge shout outs to
Kevin Kim and
Nalinda Wanikpun for playing in their first tournaments of the year after taking last semester off."
The Violets will next hit the links tomorrow for the second round of the Jekyll Invitational, with tee times yet to be determined.
