On Friday, February 28, the New York University men's and women's diving teams traveled to the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, MA.
At stake is qualification for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships March 19-22 in Greensboro, NC.
The women competed in the 1-meter dive, while the men's competition was in the 3-meter dive.
Issara Schmidt, NYU's 1-meter record-holder, was the Violets' top performer on Friday. She placed second with a total of 463.80 points.
Out of the 29 divers,
Katherine Taylor came in ninth, scoring 409.85, and
Maya Williams trailed by 0.15 to earn tenth place.
Meera Kasturi placed 12th and
Isabella Reyes rounded the Violets out in 15th place.
"We were pretty good," Head Coach
Todd Kolean said. "As a team we missed some dives early, but came back strong to miss the top by only a few points.
Issara Schmidt finished second, which will certainly qualify her into the national championship."
In the men's 3-meter dive with 15 competitors,
William Hopkins placed tenth with 427.70 points and
Mitchell Mortenson took 13th with a total of 373.50.
"It's a really hard region and if we miss only one dive, it's hard to come back from," Kolean said. "Mitchell and Will dove well, but we will need to be a little better tomorrow"
Competition continues on Saturday with the men's 1-meter dive and the women's 3-meter.
