Second verse same as the first.
For the second consecutive year, senior Jimena Menendez has captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Singles Championships. She won two matches on each day of the three-day competition, which was held in Saratoga Springs, NY, Saturday-Monday, September 21-23.
Menendez capped off her 6-0 performance with a victory over teammate Victoria Wang (6-3, 6-4) in the final. The win clinches All-America honors, as well.
This marks the fifth consecutive year, and sixth of the last seven, in which an NYU player has won the individual singles title.
"With all of our success over the last seven years, Jimena is the first NYU player to repeat as ITA Champion," explained NYU head Coach Horace Choy. "I am extremely happy for her and know that she and Victoria will represent us well at the ITA Cup."
The Violets produced three of the four singles semifinalists, with Menendez defeating another teammate, graduate student Isabella Hartman, in one and Wang beating Konika Dhull of host Skidmore College in the other.
"I was obviously very happy for the success that our team had," Choy added. "An all-NYU final is not a first, but not something you expect."
The Violets were also represented in the doubles final as Wang and fellow freshman Siona Vallabhaneni advanced through the bracket. However, the young duo could not finish off their storied run and fell to Skidmore's Dhull and Grace Truong in a tight final 7-6(4), 7-5.
"I thought Victoria and Siona competed extremely hard," Choy said. "They struggled to play their best doubles, but made it close. As freshmen, they will learn from this experience and carry it forward to the ITA Cup."
There was no team scoring at the event.
Menendez and Wang (singles), as well as Wang/Vallabhaneni (doubles) will all represent NYU at the ITA Nationals, which will be held Thursday-Sunday, October 10-13, in Rome, GA.
