The New York University women's tennis team continued competition at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, September 22, in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Three Violets will represent NYU in the semifinals of the singles tournament and one doubles team will compete in the finals.
After reaching the Round of 16 on Saturday,
Jimena Menendez,
Isabella Hartman, and
Victoria Wang each won two singles matchups on Sunday to advance to the semifinals.
Wang will also compete for the title in the doubles finals alongside
Siona Vallabhaneni.
The duo of Wang/
Vallabhaneni competed in two matches. They won in the quarterfinals (8-7) over opponents from the Rochester Institute of Technology. In the semifinals, they won (8-5) over players from the University of Rochester, a rival in the University Athleti c Association (UAA).
The duo will match up against a pair from Skidmore College in the finals.
Wang demonstrated dominance in her singles matches against opponents from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She won both matches in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) and (6-3, 6-1).
Menendez similarly won in straight sets in her first match posting a 6-2, 6-0 victory against her opponent from Skidmore. In her second match-up, Menendez won 6-1, 6-3 against an opponent from Hamilton College.
"Jimena showed good form and rolled into the semis over some solid opponents," said Head Coach
Horace Choy.
Hartman fought hard to win her first singles match posting a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win against her opponent from Skidmore.
"Isabella had to dig deep to pull out a tough three-setter in her first match, and then cruised in the next match," Choy said.
Hartman won 6-2, 6-1 in her quarterfinal match against an opponent from Ithaca College.
The semifinals will feature Hartman and Menendez going head-to-head with Menendez seeking a consecutive singles title. Wang will match up against a competitor representing Skidmore.
"Having three players in the semis shows the strength and depth of the team. In an individual tournament like this, match-ups with teammates are inevitable the further we advance," Choy suggested.
There is no team scoring at the event.
Competition will resume Monday, September 23, for the final day of the ITA Regional Championships.
