Maas Representing NYU at Olympic Trials

Record-Setting Violet in Action in Indianapolis

Derek Maas of New York University's men's swimming team represented the Violets at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which are being held in Indianapolis, IN.

Maas, who transferred to NYU from the University of Alabama prior to the 2023-24 season, left his mark all over the Violets' record book in a historic season for the men's swimming team.

The Michigan native was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Male Swimmer of the Year after capturing UAA titles in the 200 IM, 100 back, 200 back and 200 free relay.

Maas also propelled NYU to a best-ever fourth-place team finish at the NCAA Championships, winning national titles in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM while setting a new Division III record in the latter.

He achieved All-America status in four other events (200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 400 medley relay) and set program records in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 fly and 200 IM. Maas was also part of program-record-setting 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams.

In his first event of the Olympic Trials, Maas placed 37th out of 81 finishers in the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.92. The first-place finisher in each event, as well as the top four finishers in the 100m and 200m freestyle events (due to relays), are the first priority to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team.

On Thursday, June 20, Maas swam in the 200 IM in 2:04.45 which placed him 73rd out of 90 finishers.

Maas continued his Olympic Trials journey in the 100 fly prelims on Friday, June 21, taking 54th of 61 swimmers with a time of 53.87.

More than 900 swimmers are competing in Indianapolis, meaning the swimmers at this meet represent the top 0.2 percent of the more than 325,000 swimmers in the U.S.
