The New York University men's and women's track & field teams began their 2024 outdoor season with competition at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Open in Atlanta, GA, on Friday, March 22.
Among the highlights of the day's events,
Mackenzie Richard (1:08.56) and
Areyanna McCarthy (1:10.47) of the Violets women's team finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400m hurdles.
Stanley Hir placed 10th in the men's race with a time of 1:01.26.
McCarthy also placed seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.45m.
Three women finished among the top-20 in the 200m dash:
Cindy Leonard (13th, 27.56),
Beverly Okyere (15th, 27.82), and
Laila Goodman (28.12). On the men's side,
Davis Flanagin (22.95) and
Emmanuel Brito (22.97), took 15th and 16th place, respectively.
Flanagin also placed third in the long jump (6.44m).
Nishad Sankar was eighth (6.07m) and
Justin Deng took 12th (5.92m).
Jorge Rocha produced a 14th-place finish (4:08.85) in the men's 1500m.
In the field events,
Emma Grunin took fifth in the women's shot put with a mark on her final throw of 10.52m, while
Daniel Lee (9th place, 11.61m) and
Paul Ioffreda (13th place, 10.70m) competed for the men.
There was no team scoring at the meet.
Both squads will be back in action tomorrow on the second and final day of the meet, scheduled to begin at 10:30am.
