The New York University men's swimming and diving team closed out the Phoenix Invitational on Sunday, November 24, hosted by the University of Chicago.
The #4-ranked Violets secured first place among the seven competing teams with a commanding total score of 1678, far ahead of Chicago, ranked #2 nationally, which finished second with 1381 points.
Teddy McQuaid and Hodge Dauler delivered a powerful 1-2 punch in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing with times of 1:45.82 and 1:47.04, respectively. Both achieved NCAA selection standards.
Pierce Downs continued his strong meet with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 44.49 and securing an NCAA selection time.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Maksym Nechydyuk claimed victory with a time of 1:57.16, while Victor Derani followed closely in second place at 1:59.11. Both swimmers achieved NCAA selection times.
Jaeden-Hans Yburan placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:49.01, earning an NCAA "B" cut.
The Violets capped off the swimming events with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching in at 2:57.14 and meeting the NCAA selection standard.
In the 1650 freestyle, Connor Vincent finished first (15:35.51) and made the NCAA "Q" cut, as did Evan Jue (15:45.73), who placed second.
"The guys kept up their strong performance tonight to close out the meet in style," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "A dominating performance from start to finish."
In the diving events, William Hopkins delivered another excellent performance, finishing second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 448.30, which qualified him for the regional meet.
"Will Hopkins just missed winning the event but finished second with a score that qualified him for the regional meet," said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "It was a great weekend for our mid-season."
The Violets' swimmers will next compete against Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, December 7. Meanwhile, NYU's divers will head to Troy, NY, for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Go Red Diving Invitational, with Day 1 scheduled for December 7 at 2:00 PM and Day 2 on December 8 at 10:00 AM.
