The New York University men's swimming and diving team continued its dominance on the second day of the Phoenix Invitational, held Saturday, November 23, at the University of Chicago.
With a total score of 1119 among the seven teams, the Violets remain firmly in first place, 228 points ahead of the University of Chicago, which is in second place.
The evening kicked off with a dominant victory in the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.69) finishing well under the NCAA "Q" cut.
Maksym Nechydyuk secured first place in the 400-yard individual medley (3:48.76), clocking a time faster than last year's NCAA-winning mark. In the 200-yard freestyle, Connor Vincent triumphed with a time of 1:38.08.
Teddy McQuaid, securing an NCAA "Q" cut, clinched the 100-yard backstroke with an impressive finish of 48.08.
The Violets' 800-yard freestyle relay was another highlight of the night. The team smashed the previous record by more than three seconds, with Pierce Downs anchoring the relay with an impressive 1:36 split to seal the victory.
"Tonight was an incredible night of swimming for the team," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We had so many strong performances across the board. The guys really stepped up tonight, and we're in a great position heading into tomorrow's final day of competition."
Over on the diving boards, William Hopkins achieved a third-place finish in the 3-meter event with a score of 443.
"On the men's side, William Hopkins and Nolan Jennings stepped up with some challenging, high-degree-of-difficulty dives," said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "Will delivered an outstanding performance, securing his second qualifying score on the 3-meter board, while Nolan came incredibly close, missing by just one point. Both showed great promise, and we're excited to see what they bring tomorrow."
With two days of competition completed, the Violets head into the final day of the Invitational tomorrow, ready to finish strong.
