The #5-ranked New York University women's cross country team captured first place at the NCAA Niagara Region Championship in Fredonia, NY, on Saturday, November 16.
The Violets bested regional rival SUNY Geneseo, edging them out by four points (32-36) to claim victory in the 21-team, six-kilometer event. The victory ended Geneseo's three-year championship streak and earned the Violets an automatic bid to next weekend's NCAA Division III Championship.
Janie Cooper crossed the line first for the Violets, placing third overall with a time of 21:57.8.
Katherine Cochran followed in fifth place with a time of 22:06.6.
A trio of Violets secured seventh through ninth place, with Josephine Dziedzic (22:09.6) finishing seventh, Lucy Gott (22:09.8) eighth, and Daniela Sekhar (22:39.7) ninth.
Today marks NYU's first regional championship in 11 years, last achieved when the Violets captured the Atlantic Region title in 2013.
The New York University men's cross country team was also victorious at today's championship competition, marking a historic victory for both squads under Coach Tyler Deck Shipley. It is the first time in NYU annals that both teams capture regional titles in the same season.
Both the men's and women's teams will return to action next Saturday, November 23, when they travel to Terre Haute, IN, to compete in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships hosted by the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Competition is set to begin at 12:00 PM EST.
