The New York University women's fencing team began its 2024-25 season in earnest at the Nikki Franke Classic at Temple University on Saturday, October 26.
A trio of NYU freshmen fencers earned medals in the non-team competition.
Greta Yuan was the Violets' top performer, finishing third of 77 fencers in saber. She outlasted Amanda Li of the University of Pennsylvania 15-14 in the quarterfinals before falling to Sky Miller of Duke University in the semis.
Lefu Chen competed in epee and took fifth place of 88 fencers in the weapon. She advanced to the quarterfinals with a 15-10 Round of 16 victory over Anna Temiryaev of the University of North Carolina. Chen was defeated by Constanza Greggi of Long Island University in the quarterfinals by a similar score.
Also earning a medal (7th place) in epee was
Karina Dyner, who secured the quarterfinal round with a 15-13 Round of 16 victory over Penn's Victoria Kuznetsov.
"We are incredibly proud of our fencers for their outstanding performances at Temple today," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "Greta, Katherine (Lefu), and Karina demonstrated skill, focus, and resilience against a very competitive field. Earning these finishes, including a podium spot for Greta in saber, reflects the depth and talent of our program. These results are a testament to the hard work our athletes put in every day, and we're excited to build on this momentum as the season progresses."
Sophomore
Aurora Aschettino was the Violets' top performer in foil, taking 16th place of 80 competitors.
The Violets are back in action when they host St. John's University, Long Island University, and Wagner College at the NYU Invitational on Sunday, November 17, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
