Women's Fencing is Perfect at LIU Shark Showdown

Violets Go 4-0 on the Day

The New York University women's fencing team, ranked 26th in the NCAA, competed in the LIU Shark Showdown on Sunday, February 25, in Brooklyn, NY.

The Violets faced four teams during the meet. In chronological order, their opponents were 39th-ranked Lafayette College, 40th-ranked Hunter College, 28th-ranked Wagner College, and finally the hosts, LIU.

The Violets did not drop a single match during the whole Showdown. In the first match against Lafayette, the Violets saber and epee teams both won 9-0 and helped propel NYU to a 25-2 victory. Sophia Dondisch, Zara Sinha, Aurora Aschettino, Renee Wu, and Polly Adler all boasted 3-0 records in their bouts.

The second round featured NYU taking on Hunter College. The Violet saber and foil teams each triumphed 8-1 while the epee team won 7-2, giving NYU their second win of the Showdown, 23-4.

Against Wagner, it was a closer match than the previous two. Wagner's saber team took some close bouts to come out on top 6-3. NYU's foil and epee teams then both won 6-3 to edge NYU over Wagner 15-12.

The final match of the Showdown had NYU take on the host LIU Sharks. The Violets saber and foil teams both edged the Sharks' squads 5-4, and the epee team mustered a 6-3 victory, eventually leading to an 16-11 NYU win.

The fencers will return to action when participating in the NCAA Regional Championships in Brooklyn, NY, on March 10 at 7:00am back at LIU.
