The New York University women's fencing team competed in the Beguinet Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Duke University in Durham, NC, on Saturday, February 8.
The
#21-ranked Violets fenced six schools at the event coming out on top in four of their six matches. Their first win of the day came against #13-ranked Boston College (14-13), while their subsequent victories were against #24-ranked Air Force (18-9), #28 ranked Brandeis University (14-13), and #1-ranked University of Notre Dame (14-13).
The team's losses were against #18-ranked North Carolina (20-7) and #25 John Hopkins University (14-13).
The Violets had solid performances across all three weapon categories with a particularly strong performance from the epee squad led by
Katherine Chen (6-3),
Karina Dyner (8-4) and
Azniv Basralian (5-1). In saber,
Greta Yuan notched eight key wins and
Kayla Alcebar added six. In foil, the Violets' best performance came from
Polly Adler who had an overall record of 10-4 and went 3-0 against both Boston College and Brandeis.
Aurora Aschettino went 7-6 in the weapon.
"The epee squad carried the bulk of the rounds in the matches we won," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "It was a fantastic effort across the board. More than anything, I'm incredibly proud of how our epee team bounced back after the tough loss to UNC. Their resilience and focus really stood out."
The women's fencing team returns to action this Wednesday, February 12, as they travel uptown to Columbia University for a quad-meet with the host Lions, Vassar College and Sacred Heart University.
