The New York University women's fencing team competed at the Miller Invitational on Sunday, February 8, hosted by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC.
The Violets faced the University of North Carolina, Air Force Academy, Brandeis University, Penn State University, and Johns Hopkins University over the course of the meet.
NYU opened the day with a 17–10 loss to host, UNC but, quickly rebounded with a 17–10 win over Air Force. The Violets followed with back-to-back victories, earning a commanding 15–12 win over Brandeis and a tight 14–13 decision over Penn State. NYU closed the meet with a 16–11 loss to Johns Hopkins, despite claiming saber 6–3.
In epee, Lily Papadakis and Azniv Basralian led the squad with six victories each. In foil, Audrey Shitamoto posted six wins, and Claudia Meyer and Aurora Aschettino each recorded five victories. In saber, Rosemarie Benciu led the squad with 10 wins, while Greta Yuan added seven victories to the team total.
"We battled to a strong 3–2 result today and showed a lot of heart across the strip," said Head Coach Ben Bratton. "Our saber squad set the tone with a 4–1 record and overcame challenges behind the scenes to deliver when it mattered most. I'm really proud of their grit and the way they continue to grow together as a group."
The Violets will be back on the strips on February 22 at the LIU Shark Showdown, hosted by Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY.
