Three New York University women's tennis players are representing the team at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup, which is being held in Rome, GA, Thursday-Sunday, October 10-13.
Two players competed in singles on Thursday, and both came away winners, while the Violets also featured a doubles team.
Returning All-American
Jimena Menendez and freshman
Victoria Wang posted straight-set victories and have advanced to Friday's quarterfinals.
Menendez faced faced Ruth Hill of Trinity University (TX) and posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Wang's match was eerily similar, as she went on to win 6-4, 7-5 over Marissa Markey of Pomona-Pitzer.
"I'm very happy for both players," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "The first round of any tournament is difficult, especially here where everyone has earned their way through regionals."
Menendez won the singles title at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships last month, with Wang finishing as runner-up. Those results earned both players automatic qualification to the ITA Cup National Championships.
"I thought both women played well, but not their best tennis," Choy offered. "I think that with the first round under their belts, they can relax and play to their potential."
The victory secures All-America honors for Wang, while Menendez has now earned her second distinction.
Wang also played doubles with another freshman,
Siona Vallabhaneni, but the pair was defeated 6-1, 6-0.
Menendez will face Jacqueline Soloveychik of Wesleyan University on Friday, while Wang will take on Clara Zou of the University of Chicago with a bid to the semifinals on the line for both Violets.
