On Monday,
Jimena Menendez and the team of
Dakota Fordham and
Isabella Hartman became the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Champions in singles and doubles, respectively, in Geneva, NY.
The New York University women's tennis team has now won the singles crown five of the past six years and the doubles crown six years in a row.
To stake her place in the singles final, Menendez defeated Taylor Crain of Ithaca College 6-0, 7-5 in the semifinal.
In her final match of the three-day tournament, Menendez faced off against Vassar College's Erin McCusker. She shut down her opponent in two sets, posting 6-2, 6-2 to take the crown.
In the doubles final, Fordham and Hartman matched up against Sophie Shen and McCusker of Vassar. Playing to three sets, the Violets triumphed 7-6 (3), 6-7 (2), 10-8 to finish off their weekend.
For Fordham, this is the junior's third straight ITA doubles champion title.
Menendez, Fordham and Hartman earned All-America status for their feats at the regional championship. The list of ITA All-Americans in Violet program history now stands at 24.
"I'm so happy for our women," Head Coach
Horace Choy said. "They really had a great tournament and pulled out some tough matches. We've had a lot of success at this tournament in recent years. Even so, I take nothing for granted and nothing was given to us. The women really stepped up when they needed to. Jimena was focused the entire weekend and played some of her best tennis. Dakota and Isabella have only paired for a little while but they have a high ceiling. Isabella has fit in seamlessly with the team and Dakota is making her third straight trip to the ITA Cup in doubles with three different partners. It says a lot about her game and adaptability. Overall, it was a really great weekend for NYU women's tennis."
Menendez will join Fordham and Hartman at the ITA Cup in Rome, GA, from October 12-14 to compete at the national level.
