The New York University women's tennis team wrapped up their first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship on Saturday, September 23, in Geneva, NY.
Hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the tournament is taking place from September 23-25. A total of 23 colleges are represented at the event.
Jimena Menendez and
Dakota Fordham advanced from their first two matches to continue play on Sunday.
Menendez won her first match 6-0, 6-0, then took her second match 6-3, 6-2 to secure her place in the Round of 16. Fordham posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory, coupled with a 6-1, 6-2 win to join her teammate.
In doubles action, Fordham teamed up with
Isabella Hartman to record an 8-0 triumph against their Rochester Institute of Technology opponents and move on to Sunday's quarterfinals, where they will face a match-up from Vassar College.
Menendez and
Ksenia Goel also won their Round of 16 match 8-6 against a pair from the University of Rochester. In the quarterfinals, they will also play against a Vassar duo.
"Dakota and Jimena took care of business on day one, winning in relatively easy fashion," Head Coach
Horace Choy said. "Competition will be more difficult tomorrow but they are in good position. The doubles teams had some nice wins. I think both teams have another level and hope they are able to bring it tomorrow."
The Violets will continue ITA Regional Championship on Sunday.
