The New York University duo of
Ida Krause and
Dakota Fordham got out to an early lead and won the first set of their quarterfinal doubles match at the NCAA Individual Championships on Saturday, May 20.
However, they could not hold the lead against Lauren Rha and Nina Ye of Pomona-Pitzer. Things took a turn for the worse as their opponents came back to win the final two sets and eliminate the Violet duo from the tournament.
Playing at the USTA National Training Center in Orlando, FL, Krause and Dakota took the first set of Saturday's match 6-3, but could not maintain the momentum as Rha and Ye battled back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-3.
NYU's twosome was the first to ever compete at the NCAA's, and they had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jessica Lu and Sarah Pertsemlidis of MIT on Friday.
"We got off to a great start and had good energy. We just didn't sustain it," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "They played better, we let down and then couldn't turn it around until it was too late. We dug ourselves too big of a hole."
Krause had also competed in the singles bracket and was eliminated in a close match on Friday
"It was a great great season for both of them and for our team," Choy added. "As a doubles pair they excelled all year long. This was a tough way to end the season, especially since we had the lead. Except for one team, everyone ends their season with a loss. But, this doesn't take away from the historical season that they had. Our team qualifying for the NCAA's for the first time and these two earning spots in the individual championships is an accomplishment that this program had never achieved before!"
