The New York University women's tennis team lost to the University of Chicago 5-0 in the semifinals of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, April 21.
The three-day event is being held in Altamonte Springs, FL.
After defeating Case Western Reserve University in the opening round on Thursday, the #5-seeded Violets were defeated by the top-seeded Maroons on Friday. Chicago is currently
ranked #1 in the nation by the ITA, while the
Violets are at #18.
The doubles matched were contested first, with Chicago taking all three matches. The Violets' #3 team of
Jimena Menendez and
Anastasiia Balyk fell just short at 8-6.
When the Maroons captured the #2 and #6 singles contests, the rest of the matches went unfinished. However, NYU's #1 (
Ida Krause) and #5 (
Molly Heber) singles players had each won the first set of their matches before play was halted.
"I'm very proud of this team," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "They went toe-to-toe with the number one team in the country. All three doubles were close. However, the 3-0 deficit was too much to come back from. Another tough match tomorrow that we need to be ready for."
The Violets now face #6 seed Washington University in St. Louis in the Third-Place Match on Saturday at 12:30 pm.
