The New York University's men and women's track & field teams traveled to the Monmouth Season Opener to commence their outdoor season on Friday, March 24, and Sunday, March 26, in West Long Branch, NJ.
On Friday,
Michelle Uvieghara represented the Violets in the discus with a fifth-place performance and a new school record of 40.15m. Uvieghara surpassed Fae Gibson's 38.78m mark set in 2000. Friday's performance topped Uvieghara's previous best throw which she set at last season's University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships where she placed second.
The Violets continued to set new personal records throughout Sunday's competition.
In the men's 1,500-meter run, sophomore
Sam Frank recorded a 4:24.01 which surpassed his pervious best by 25 seconds.
In the 200-meter dash,
Travis Perry clocked in at 23.69 while
Summer Reid and
Dasha Jackson crossed the line in 26.14 and 27.20, respectively, to secure new personal records.
Reid also set a new personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.49, while
Isre'al Conerly finished in 12.45 to top her previous record of 12.82 set exactly one year ago at the Oscar Moore Invitational.
Brandon Meiner (15:44.74) and
Jorge Rocha (15:45.77) reached new heights in the 5k, while freshman
Andrew Taylor came across the line in 15:23.44 to place 10th in his first track outing as a Violet.
In her debut outdoor appearance in the long jump,
Kate Walsh marked 5.01m to place 15th in a field of 31 competitors.
"We had a good season opener at Monmouth," said Associate Head Coach
Michael Roberts. "Michelle led the way on Friday by setting a new personal best and breaking a 23-year-old school record in the discus throw. This was a good start to our outdoor season."
There was no team scoring at the meet.
Team members will travel to either the Ramapo College Invitational in Mahwah, NJ, or the Colonial Relays hosted by The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, next weekend March 31-April 2.
