New York University's
ninth-ranked men's fencing team wrapped up its competition at the NCAA Championships at Duke University in Durham, NC, on Friday.
After the first two days of action, the Violets are in 12th place out of the 23 represented schools.
Third-ranked University of Notre Dame is currently in the lead, while fourth-ranked Columbia University is in second.
Brian Kim tallied eight saber victories over the two days of competition for NYU, four on Day 1 and four on Day 2. He concluded his season with an 18th-place finish at Nationals.
In épée,
Ian Adler posted one victory win on Friday to place 19th with eight total match wins.
To round out the Violets' competitors,
Farr Dickson picked up two more foil victories to add to his five on Thursday, concluding in 21st place.
"Everyone gave an amazing effort and fought through a really tough second round," Head Coach
Ben Bratton said. "This tournament is always challenging just because it's two days. It means the athletes have to be very focused and recover to get right back on the strip. That's a challenge that's really hard to recreate without direct experience, and given this was the first time at Nationals for our fencers, they did a great job performing at this level."
The Championships continue with the women's competition on Saturday and Sunday. The women's team points are combined with the men's team's for one overall champion.
"To qualify for Nationals is extremely tough, let alone fence in it, so hat's off to Farr for accomplishing this as a freshman," Bratton said. "He learned a lot of lessons that he'll definitely use and pass on to the rest of the foil team in the future. Ian and Brian finished their collegiate season on a high note, and I'm excited for them to continue to fence at the U.S. National Championships in Phoenix, AZ, from June 30-July 9, which is a qualifier for the U.S. National Team."
Darren Yen also competed for NYU. However, after four rounds of saber on Thursday, three of which he won, he was unable to continue due to injury.
"It was a little disappointing to lose Darren to injury because he's worked so hard this season and was undefeated," Bratton commented. "He was honestly poised to do something pretty incredible. Emotionally, that was hard for us to get through."
Friday's NCAA Championship action marked the end of the fencing season for NYU as the men are done and the Violets have no fencers in the women's competition.
During the regular season, the NYU men posted a 14-13 record while the
21st-ranked women's team went 9-19.
