Members of the New York University men and women's distance team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11, at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center in Boston, MA.
In the women's mile run,
Leah Haley and
Katherine Cheng notched new personal records running 5:09.87 and 5:10.54, respectively. Both Haley and Cheng beat their previous records by just a bit over two seconds.
"It was great having another teammate pushing me through the race, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without her," Cheng said.
In the men's 5,000-meter run,
Aidin Hasan finished with a time of 14:45.74, while
Nicholas Ankuta crossed the line in 14:49.18. Both Hasan and Ankuta beat their previous personal records by over 20 seconds.
"I was super excited coming into the race because I knew it was a great opportunity with some awesome competition," said Hasan. "I really just let the race come to me and worked off Nick, who was a big help."
Grace Richardson (17:07.06) and
Daniela Sekhar (18:16.11) competed in their first 5k as Violets, while
Lucy Gott ran her first 3k and finished with a time of 10:23.31.
Jon Diaz and
Aleksander Jopek competed in the 800-meter run, completing the race in 1:53.15 and 1:58.64, respectively. In the seeded 500-meter run
Ryan Tobin finished with a time of 14:58.85.
Both the men and women's teams return to action on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26, when they travel to Waltham, MA to compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships hosted by Brandies University.
