Men's Fencing Earns Trio of Victories at Sacred Heart

Violets Defeat Vassar, Sacred Heart and NJIT

New York University's men's fencing team won three of its five matchups at the Sacred Heart Tradition Meet on Sunday, December 3, at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.

The Violets defeated Vassar College (20-7), the host Pioneers (19-8) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10) while falling to both Princeton University (15-12) and Penn State University (17-10) for a 3-2 record at the event.

NYU was victorious in all three weapons against Vassar, as foil won all but one bout, saber came out on top 7-2 and epee eeked out a 5-4 win. Michael Kang led the way for epee, going 3-0 to ensure victory. Kevin Zu won all three of his saber matchups while Jerry Pan and Matthew Zhou both went 2-1. Farr Dickson and Adam Wong were undefeated in foil and Bryce McClain won twice.

All three weapons were similarly successful against Sacred Heart, with saber winning 7-2 and both foil and epee holding 6-3 advantages. Pan and Zhou combined for six of the seven saber triumphs, McClain was 3-0 in foil and Kang and Tyler Cho won two apiece in epee.

The saber squad paced the Violets against NJIT with an 8-1 victory. NYU's epee fencers edged the Highlanders 6-3, but NJIT won 6-3 in foil. Cho and Ian Adler were both twice victorious in epee while Zu swept his three foil competitors. Pan and Darren Yen both won twice in foil as well.

NYU's saber team also performed well against Princeton, winning the weapon 7-2. But, the Tigers were triumphant in both foil (5-4) and epee (8-1) to secure victory. Zu once again was 3-0 in saber for the Violets while Yen and Pan each won a pair.

Saber had quite the day, also winning 6-3 against Penn State. However, the Nittany Lions took epee 8-1 and foil 6-3 to claim victory. It was Yen this time who swept his opponents, winning all three of his saber bouts. Oliver Hu picked up two victories in foil as well.

Members of the men's fencing team will next compete at USA Fencing's North American Cup on Sunday, December 10.
