The New York University contingent of
Jimena Menendez,
Dakota Fordham and
Isabella Hartman concluded play at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Cup on Saturday, October 14, in Rome, GA.
The NYU trio had qualified for this national competition after winning titles at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships last month.
Menendez, who qualified in singles, and Fordham and Hartman, who qualified in doubles, played in their final matches of the three-day event on Saturday.
After dropping three-setters on both Thursday and Friday, Menendez completed her action with another three-setter, this time finishing victoriously over Lauryn Douglas of Bethel University 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
The victory placed Menendez in a 13th-place tie in the 16-person event.
"I'm happy that Jimena was able to end the fall on a winning note," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "She has played so well the entire fall season. Jimena showed her resilience by coming back from a set down after having lost two tough three-setters already. I know that her success this fall will only motivate her to work hard to be ready for the spring."
Fordham and Hartman faced the Binder sisters (Cassidy and Sydnie) of Pacific University on Saturday, a match that was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to rain.
After losing their opening-round match on Thursday, the NYU duo closed out their competition with a 6-4, 6-4 win on Saturday.
"It was a good finish for them. Not just to win, but they played well and can build on this for the spring," Choy explained. "They had good energy and were rewarded for being the more aggressive team. Nice finish to a strong fall."
By virtue of their victories at the regionals, all three players have earned ITA All-America honors.
