The New York University men's and women's track & field teams opened their 2023 indoor season on Friday, January 20, with competition at the Gotham Cup. The meet was held at the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Athletic Complex on Staten Island, NY.
Katherine Cheng logged 10:39.04 in the first 3k of her collegiate track career to place 10th of 23 runners, just beating teammate
Leah Haley in 11th with 10:41.36.
Summer Reid clocked 8.29 in the 60-meter dash while
Isre'al Conerly posted 26.59 in the 200-meter.
Kate Walsh debuted in the long jump and posted a mark of 4.99m.
On the men's team,
Ryan Tobin ran a personal best of 4:15.52 in the mile to place 13th out of 66.
Jon Diaz finished in 22nd, recording 4:19.20 to blow past his personal record of 4:31.78.
James Thompson clocked 51.65 in the 400 meter to finish 20th in a field of 61.
Aleksander Jopek placed 14th of 50 in the 1000 meter with a time of 2:33.34.
In the field events,
Matthew Oluwole high jumped 1.94m and took third place while
Oliver Fideler placed eighth in the triple jump (13.92m).
Both NYU teams are back in action next weekend, with competitions at the Dr. Sander Invitational Challenge at Columbia University on Friday and Saturday, and the McElligot Invitational at Haverford College in Haverford, PA, on Saturday.
