The New York University women's tennis team began competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships in Clinton, NY, on Friday, September 23.
Singles and doubles play will continue through Sunday, September 25.
NYU sophomore
Dakota Fordham, last season's individual singles and double champion (with former teammate
Carol Plakk), is seeded #2 in both events this season. Her current doubles partner is graduate student
Ida Krause.
Fordham justified her ranking on Friday, winning both of her singles matches and partnering with Krause to win their doubles match against Nico Gusac and Maya Kelly of Bard College in shutout fashion (8-0).
In Fordham's first singles match of the day, she double-bageled Morgan Grimmie of The College of New Jersey 6-0, 6-0. Her second match resulted in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jackie Drozd of RIT as she advanced to the Round of 16 on Saturday morning.
Krause also advanced by winning both of her singles matches, easing past Kirsten Auble of RIT 6-0, 6-1, and defeating Jasmin Toor of the University of Rochester 6-1, 6-0.
Karina Jensrud,
Anastasiia Balyk and
Aditi Narayan were also victorious in both of their singles matches and advance to the Round of 16, while
Jimena Menendez won her first match but was ousted in the second.
NYU was also successful in its other two doubles matches on Friday, as the duos of Jensrud and Narayan (8-5) and Menendez and Balyk (8-7,1) also advanced to Saturday's second round.
"I'm happy with the way the women played today," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "They played in cold, windy conditions, but stayed focus and played some high-level tennis. There is still a lot to be played, but I feel good about where they are right now."
