Barrett Returns to NYU

Former Team Captain Rejoins Women's Basketball as Assistant Coach

Annie Barrett, the all-time assists leader in New York University women's basketball program history, is returning to assist Head Coach Meg Barber and the Violets.

Barrett, a 2020 NYU magna cum laude graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Cultural Analysis, is returning as an assistant coach. A four-year member of the women's basketball team, Barrett's 435 career assists tops the all-time list, as does her 202 dimes during the 2019-20 season (which also led NCAA Division III).

A two-time team captain, Barrett was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Co-Defensive Player of the Year and was a Second Team All-UAA selection as a senior.

"We are beyond excited to bring home one of our own as we continue to pursue excellence both on and off the court," Barber said. "As a student-athlete, Annie set the example for everything our program stands for. She had a selfless, team-first mentality and a competitive will to grow into and own her experience and share it with those around her.

"Annie will be able to seamlessly mentor our current student-athletes as well as recruit talented prospects as she possesses the unmatched experience that NYU can offer student-athletes firsthand. I am ecstatic that our student-athletes can connect with and learn from Annie right away. As her former coach, I could not be more excited to add a person of Annie's character to our team. Welcome home, Annie!"

During Barrett's time as a Violet, NYU posted a 70-40 overall record and advanced to postseason play each season. The Violets won the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Division III Championship in 2019 and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2020.

In addition to her stellar on-court production, Barrett was a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree and was named CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) All-Academic District 3 as a senior.

Barrett played in 91 games as a Violet, 84 as a starter.

"I am thrilled to be coming back to NYU to work alongside Coach Barber and Coach Nettie (Respondek). They were tremendous coaches during my time at NYU, and it was a privilege to play for them," Barrett said. "I look forward to supporting our culture of excellence within the UAA, developing student-athletes as players, as students, and as members of the NYU global community.

"NYU is a diverse and dynamic world-class university, and the history of NYU women's basketball is rich and filled with tradition. I couldn't be more honored to rejoin NYU as an assistant coach. My experience here was incredible, and I'm excited to help other student-athletes embrace all that NYU has to offer and to reach their full potential."

After graduating, Barrett served as the Development and Database Coordinator of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (MA) beginning in January 2021. Previous to that position, she held postgraduate internships at All In Together and Visit.org and undergraduate internships at Team Impact and the Women's Sports Foundation.

A native of Cambridge, MA, Barrett resides in New York City.
