It was a competitive day for the New York University Women's Tennis Team as the Violets completed play against Babson College on Saturday, April 2, in Babson Park, MA.
After winning both of their matches the previous weekend, the Violets fell to the Babson Beavers 6-3 in singles and doubles competition.
The doubles play was a mixed bag for NYU, as the second doubles team of
Jimena Menendez and
Anastasiia Balyk toppled their opponents in an eight-game pro set 8-4. However, Babson took the other two doubles matches as the first doubles team
Karina Jensrud and
Carol Plakk lost in close fashion 9-7 and the third doubles team of
Phoebe Su/
Lynn Robinson fell 8-2.
The Violets fared better in singles with Plakk rallying to win in comeback fashion at first singles (2-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Jensrud winning second singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. However, the Beavers were victorious in four singles matches. NYU' s third singles player Menendez fell 6-4, 6-2 and
Emily Baxter lost at fifth singles 6-3, 6-2. Balyk started out strong at third singles, winning the first set 6-3, but was overtaken in the second (6-3) and third (6-3). Last but not least, sixth singles Su lost 6-3, 6-3 to Babson.
Despite the loss, the Violets look ahead to more competitive and close matchups.
"The match could have gone either way, as the teams are very close," Head Coach
Horace Choy said. "Babson managed to eke out a tiebreaker to win at first doubles and lead 2-1 going into the singles. Carol rallied from a set down and won in three sets while Karina continued her winning ways. Nastia had a three setter that they won. A bounce here or there was really all that separated us. The women are looking to rebound tomorrow against Brandeis."
The Violets continue their weekend on the road tomorrow, April 2, when they will play Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
