The New York University women's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2009 with its pair of victories this past weekend. The Violets defeated Washington and Lee University (71-61) and Bates College (76-54) on their home floor to secure a spot in the tournament's second weekend.
NYU, currently ranked seventh nationally in both major polls, will travel to the campus of Hope College in Holland, MI, to play the University of Scranton on Friday, March 11, at 5 pm. Hope will take on Millikin University at 7 pm on Friday, with the winner of each game matching up on Saturday, March 12, at 7 pm.
The Violets are in the midst of a historic season, winning the University Athletic Association (UAA) championship outright for the first time since 1997; that year the team won the National Championship. NYU also currently boasts program standards in scoring average (78.4) and field goal percentage (44.9).
NYU swept the UAA's end-of-season awards, as
Jenny Walker was named the Player of the Year,
Belle Pellecchia secured Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors and
Natalie Bruns garnered Sophomore Rookie of the Year accolades. Walker and Pellecchia were tabbed First Team All-UAA while Bruns and
Jordan Janowski landed on the second team. All four stars will return to the program next season.
