Playing at home for the first time this season, the New York University women's tennis team fell, 5-4, in a hard-fought match against Wellesley College on Saturday at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.
"The women played hard and competed all the way to the end," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We were down 4-1 before drawing even at 4-4. It came down to the last match and Wellesley was able to pull it out."
Carol Plakk and
Karina Jensrud teamed up to win a tightly-contested battle at first doubles, while each won their singles matches as well. The duo defeated Annissa Mu and Melinda Alviar, 8-7, winning the tiebreaker 7-4. The Blue won the other two doubles matches, 8-2 and 8-0.
Plakk, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA)
fifth-ranked singles player, bested Michaela Markwart (6-2, 6-0) at No. 1 singles. Jensrud defeated Mu—6-3, 6-2— at second singles as the Violets mounted their comeback.
Rookie
Jimena Menendez picked up a singles win as well, at the third flight, over Michelle Shen by a score of 6-4, 6-0.
Emily Baxter played tough at No. 4 singles, but ultimately fell to Libby Chang 7-5, 6-2.
"The women took a step forward from our last match and look to continue to do so next time out," Choy added.
NYU is back in action next Saturday, March 12, on the road at The College of New Jersey.
