A slew of new postseason awards were announced today honoring members of New York University's men's and women's basketball teams.
Senior men's forward
Bobby Hawkinson continues to rack up accolades, as he was named a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) First Team Academic All-American, to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 4 First Team, the
D3hoops.com Region 4 Player of the Year, and to the
D3hoops.com All-Region 4 First Team.
The Violet women were also well represented in the
D3hoops.com regional honors, with
Belle Pellecchia earning Region 4 Rookie of the Years kudos while she and
Jenny Walker landed on the All-Region 4 First Team. Head Coach
Meg Barber received Region 4 Coach of the Year recognition after leading a young NYU squad to its first outright University Athletic Association (UAA) title since 1997, first NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance since 2007 and a 25-2 overall record (13-1 UAA).
Hawkinson, who is also a Jostens Trophy finalist and will play in the 2022 NABC - Reese's Division III College All-Star Game this weekend, was a First Team All-UAA selection after finishing among the top 10 in the country in double-doubles (20, third), rebounding (13.2, seventh) and field goal percentage (65.3, seventh). He was the focal point of NYU's offense this year, scoring 20-plus points 14 times, including 30-plus on three occasions, and became the 31st Violet to surpass 1,000 career points. He also sports a 3.68 GPA, leading to his prestigious Academic All-America status.
Pellecchia burst onto the scene as a freshman, becoming the second Violet ever to win UAA Rookie of the Year honors and the third UAA Defensive Player of the Year in program history. She landed on the All-UAA First Team after ranking top 10 in the league in steals per game (2.7, first), field goal percentage (48.9, fourth), assists per game (3.1, fifth), free throw percentage (75.2, seventh), and scoring (13.0, t-seventh).
Walker took home the UAA Player of the Year award as an imposing presence down low for the Violets all season. She finished second in the Association in total rebounds (212), second in blocks per game (1.8) and fourth in free throw percentage (78.4). Her 11.9 points per game were second on the team; she posted six double-doubles and had three-or-more blocks in nine different games.
The
D3hoops.com All-Region honorees are eligible for the outlet's All-America teams, which will be released on Saturday, March 19.
