Men's Golf Sets Team Record

Violets Shoot Program-Best 281 in Capturing St. Lawrence Invite

The New York University Men's Golf Team set a new program standard in capturing the St. Lawrence University Invitational, which was held Saturday and Sunday, September 4-5, at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course in Canton, NY.

Entering Sunday's second round with a 15-stroke lead in the six-team competition, the Violets shot a program-best 281 and finished with a 40-stroke victory over second-place St. Lawrence. The previous record of 282 was set in 2019 at the Skidmore Invitational.

"Everyone played great," said Head Coach Katie Rudolph. "I always play to win and I don't want to enter a golf tournament unless I think we're good enough to win it. That's the way I want our attitude to be wherever we play golf."

Jorge Montero (Madrid, Spain/Logos International School), who shot a four-under par 68 on Saturday followed that up with a 69 on Sunday to take the individual title. Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma) shot the day's best round, 68, and finished in second place.

"I will take a lot of positives out of the tournament," said Montero, a senior who was playing in his first tournament for NYU. "I played very smart and made good decisions off the tee, which put me in good positions on every hole. I'm just very happy right now. This was a fun experience."

Three Violets tied for fifth place as Rohan Aerrabolu (Plano, TX/Plano West) (74-75), Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) (77-72) and Andy Yang (Sugar Land, TX/Clements) (77-72) all finished at 149 in the 36-player competition.

"I'm proud of the team and I'm proud of Jorge," Rudolph added. "It's tough to sleep on a lead, and he got the 'W' for us. It's a wonderful thing."

NYU returns to action next weekend for the Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, on Saturday and Sunday, September 11-12.
