Women's Tennis Completes Weekend Play

Violets Dominate at Vassar Scramble

It was a successful weekend for the New York University Women's Tennis team as the Violets completed play on Sunday, September 12, at the Vassar Scramble in Poughkeepsie, NY.

After a rousing opening day on Saturday, the Violets continued their dominant performance on Sunday. Three pairs of NYU doubles teams won both of their matches, while individually all six players also won their singles matchups. There was no team scoring at the Scramble.

"As a whole, the women played better today," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "There were good results up and down the lineup. However, I'm not that concerned with the scores and results. I just want them to focus on improving and getting better. If we do that, the results will take care of themselves."

Returning All-Americans Anastasiia Balyk (Odessa, Ukraine/Boca Prep International) and Karina Jensrud (Oslo, Norway/Laurel Springs School) defeated their two doubles opponents, both from SUNY New Paltz by scores of 8-2 and then 8-1. Individually, Balyk defeated her opponent from host Vassar 6-3, 6-4, while Jensrud was victorious over her opponent from New Paltz by scores of 7-6(2), 6-1.

The newcomers were also impressive for NYU, as the freshman duo of Dakota Fordham (New York, NY/Laurel Springs School (CA)) and Carol Plakk (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigümnaasium) won their two doubles matches by scores of 8-0 and 8-0 and individually bageled (6-0, 6-0) each of their opponents.

"The fact that we're able to see action again and create bonds with each other after everything the pandemic brought is incredible," said Fordham. "This tournament kicked off our fall season and I'm very excited to see what happens next."

Another pair of freshmen also combined for two doubles wins and individual victories. Emily Baxter (East Dennis, MA/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Julia Siegler (Miami, FL/Cushman) defeated their New Paltz opponents by identical 8-2 scores and captured their singles matches, as well.

The NYU fall season continues next weekend when the Violets compete at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships at William Smith College in Geneva, NY, Saturday-Monday, September 18-20.
