New York University's Women's Tennis Team returned to competition today after a year-and-a-half hiatus, competing at the Vassar College Scramble in Poughkeepsie, NY, where they faced off against student-athletes from Vassar and SUNY New Paltz. The Violets will conclude the Scramble tomorrow as they prepare for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals next week.
"I was very happy and excited to be back on the tennis court after the long layoff. The results were secondary to the opportunity to compete," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "The play was a little uneven, which is to be expected early in the season. There were enough positives from everyone to build on and I expect some better play tomorrow."
Carol Plakk began the day for the Violets in her collegiate debut, winning 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Fellow rookie Dakota Fordham also picked up a convincing singles win, 6-1, 6-0, in her first collegiate match.
2019 ITA All-Americans
Karina Jensrud and
Anastasiia Balyk both went 2-0 in singles on the day, while
Emily Baxter,
Jamaica Buyse, Claire Huang, and
Julia Siegler also picked up singles victories.
In doubles, the duo of Plakk and Fordham earned an 8-2 win, Pearl Nguyen and
Jimena Menendez teamed up for an 8-4 triumph in their collegiate debuts and Buyse-Huang won a closely contested match.
NYU begins day 2 of the Scramble tomorrow at 9 am.
