The New York University Women's Golf Team finished in third place at the Williams College Invitational, which was held Saturday and Sunday, October 2-3, at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, MA.
After shooting 310 strokes on Saturday and entering Sunday's round in third place, the Violets lowered their score to 306, but could not catch host Williams College (590) or Amherst College (592).
"The team did better today," said Assistant Coach
Chance Scheffing. "We just couldn't get any birdies to drop. We only had five, which was not enough to overcome our deficit."
The Violets (616) did finish 10 strokes ahead of fellow University Athletic Association (UAA) member Emory University (626).
After shooting a four-over-par 75 on Saturday,
Nalinda Wanikpun (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee School) bettered that by two strokes on Sunday. She recorded three birdies en route to her 73. Wanikpun's two-day total of 148 landed her in a tie for fourth place individually.
"I feel good with my game and was happy with my overall performance," Wanikpun said.
Isabel Herrera (Wellington, FL/American Heritage School Boca/Delray), who shot 80 on Saturday, improved by six strokes on Sunday and finished in a tie for 17th place.
Also scoring for NYU was
Camilla Chung (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatian College Prep) (78-79, 157, tied for 23rd) and
Madison Phung (Frisco, TX/Lebanon Trail) (77-82, 159, 27th).
Overall, 10 teams and 56 golfers competed.
"It was tough conditions today. It rained for over half the round. It's fall golf," Scheffing revealed. "We started out strong and just ran out of steam down the stretch."
The Violets return to action on Saturday and Sunday, October 16-17, when they host the NYU Invitational at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ.
