New York University varsity sports will not be competing within the University Athletic Association (UAA) during the 2021 spring sports season.
On January 12, the UAA Presidents Council unanimously approved a resolution to cancel all formal UAA spring sport competition. This follows a similar decision in both the fall and winter seasons, as UAA varsity competition has now been completely canceled during the 2020-21 academic year.
"For the third time this academic year, we have regrettably found ourselves having to suspend intercollegiate athletics competition, specifically in the UAA," said
Stuart Robinson, NYU's Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "While each announcement has been difficult because of the impact that it has on our student-athletes, this latest decision has been the most difficult. For the second consecutive spring season, these student-athletes have lost an opportunity for UAA competition. Although the health and safety of students, staff and our University community must remain at the forefront of any decision, I feel for our student-athletes who have lost a part of their undergraduate identity these last two seasons. I can only hope that this is the last season that we have to cancel."
