Mapes Hired as Assistant Sports Information Director

Joins NYU After Completing Graduate Assistant Position at Canisius College

Melissa Mapes has been named New York University's Assistant Sports Information Director. She will assist with the publicity of the Violets' 23 varsity athletics teams by helping to maintain the department's website, oversee statistical and webcast operations, create game programs, and manage NYU's use of social media, new media and technology.

A 2016 graduate of Fredonia State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management, Mapes served as a sports information intern as an undergraduate. She then went on to work as a communications assistant at the American Athletic Conference in Providence, RI, and was the primary contact for softball and tennis.

From 2017-19, Mapes served as Graduate Assistant for Athletic Communications at NCAA Division I Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. While earning her Master of Science degree in sport administration, Mapes was the primary contact for the Golden Griffins' softball, cross country, track, swimming and diving, and women's soccer teams.

"Melissa brings a great deal of experience, enthusiasm, initiative, and sports information savvy to this office," said NYU Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information, Jeffrey Bernstein. "She is a great addition and I am excited to have her here."

During her time in Western New York, Mapes also worked for the Buffalo Bills of the NFL in their ticket department and for the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL as a sales associate.

"I am excited to join the NYU Sports Information team and look forward to the seasons ahead," Mapes said.

Mapes is a native and resident of Queens, NY.
