Two New York University student-athletes have earned weekly honors following their stellar performances this past weekend.
Zahra Alexander of women's basketball and
Kaley McIntyre of women's swimming and diving were named a University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week, while
Emerson Evans of men's volleyball was tabbed the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Player of the Week.
Alexander had a pair of outstanding games as the
top-ranked Violets won both their UAA matchups over the weekend. Shooting an incredible 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the floor over the two contests, she scored a career-high 22 points in the Violets' 75-54 win over the University of Rochester on Friday. Alexander shot 8-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 from the foul line while adding a steal in the contest.
Then, in NYU's 93-66 win over #8-ranked Emory on Sunday, she finished with 18 points on 7-of-9 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line in addition to one rebound, two assists, three blocks, and a steal.
Evans starred for the
#8-ranked Violets at the Santa Cruz Slug Slam, in which NYU won two of its three matches. On the weekend, the junior right side hitter totaled 67 kills on .353 hitting, along with four serving aces, 12 digs, and six solo blocks.
In the team's season opener, Evans put down 22 kills on .436 hitting in a four-set win over Concordia University Wisconsin. The following night, he registered 23 kills on .367 hitting, as well as four total blocks, in a ranked victory over #9 California Lutheran University.
He ended the weekend with 22 kills on .267 hitting against #13-ranked University of California Santa Cruz.
In
#2-ranked women's swimming and diving's two duals this past week, McIntyre swept all eight races she competed in, helping her team to wins against Gettysburg University (175-81) and on Senior Day Saturday against #19 Johns Hopkins University (199-62). The senior anchored the Violets to relay wins in the 200 medley (1:46.12) and 400 freestyle (3:27.97) in the mid-week dual against Gettysburg, adding wins in the 200 freestyle (1:52.82) and 50 freestyle (23.54).
Against Hopkins, McIntyre started the day anchoring the Violets "A" team in the 200 medley relay, turning in a 22.92 freestyle split to give the team a 1:44.83 finish. She paced the field in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:51.79. She added another win in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 51.25, over one second ahead of second place. Her 50.38 anchor leg in the 400 freestyle relay helped NYU to a confident win over the field. McIntyre's four wins helped the Violets to a 199-62 win over Hopkins in their final dual meet of the season.
