Two New York University student-athletes have been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week following their stellar performances last week.
Justin Mayes of wrestling and
Caroline Peper of women's basketball were honored.
Peper had an historic weekend as the Violets captured the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament Championship hosted by Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. In the opener on Saturday, she scored 20 points in only 18 minutes in the Violets' 115-42 win over Colby-Sawyer. She added two assists, a rebound, a block, and a steal in the contest.
Then, in Sunday's 102-70 over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the Championship Game, Peper tied the NYU program record with 41 points and 11 made three-pointers, while also becoming the 20th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points. She also totaled two rebounds, four assists and seven steals in the game.
Over the two games, she averaged 30.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 0.5 blocks, and 4.0 steals while shooting 57.8% (22-38) from the field, 45.4% (15-33) from three-point range and 100% (2-2) from the foul line. For her efforts, Peper was named Tournament MVP.
Mayes delivered a big win in NYU's 42-7 victory over NCAA Division II Felician University on Tuesday. Going against Alex Dorce, Division II's #11-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds, Mayes posted a 7-2 decision win.
Mayes is now 7-0 this season, while the Violets have posted a 4-0 dual-meet mark.
