On Sunday, December 8, the New York University men's fencing team competed in the Tradition Tournament, hosted by Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
The Violets finished 5-1 with wins against Penn State University (17-10), New Jersey Institute of Technology (15-12), Vassar College (21-6), Sacred Heart (22-5), and Brown University 18-9. Their lone loss came against Princeton University (21-6).
"This was one of the most outstanding outings of the men's team in the past five years," said Head Coach
Steve Mormando. "The men upset last year's NCAA runner-up Penn State in a dramatic win. After losing to Princeton, they recovered to win four matches in a row!"
In sabre,
Brian Kim (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) had the Violets' best overall record winning 14 bouts and losing just one.
Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) finished 13-3 in epee while
Zohaib Mannan (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) had a record of 9-7 in foil.
"Our captain, Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton), flew back from studying abroad in Paris to compete in this event and anchored a young epee team," said Mormando. "He made a huge difference and showed terrific leadership both on and off the strip. It was a great weekend overall for NYU Fencing."
Several members of the team are expected to compete at the North American Circuit in Charlotte, NC, from Friday, January 3, through Monday, January 6.
