The New York University men's golf team shot a second-round 295 and overtook Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to capture the Liberty League Fall Preview at the Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone in Verona, NY. The two-day tournament took place Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6.

After shooting 302 in round one, NYU entered the second round trailing RPI by three strokes. However, the Violets bested the first-round leaders by five strokes on Sunday to win the seven-team tournament.

"We wound up bringing it home today with a great Sunday. One of the best team days of the year for us," said Assistant Coach Jack Kurtenbach. "We felt good about Saturday's round, but we knew we needed something like today to make it happen."

A pair of Violets were tied for the lead after 36 holes. Robbie Keyes' (Louisville, KY/duPont Manual) three-under-par 69 on Sunday lifted him from a 15th-place standing after round one into a tie with teammate Alan Chen (Freemont, CA/Mission San Jose). Chen had carded a first-round score of two-over-par 74 followed by a one-over 73 on Sunday.

Both golfers finished with 147 and headed for a playoff, which Keyes won on the second hole with a par after each had parred the first.

"Robbie and Alan led the way," Kurtenback explained. "Alan was the more steady of the two. But, Robbie's Sunday was phenomenal. Shooting three-under is rare enough, but he did it with the elements (rain and wind) today. He got - and deserves - a lot of props for that."

Joseph Burlison (Salinas, CA/Palma), who shot a pair of 75's for NYU, finished in a tie for sixth place. Chris Lee (Palisades Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) (153, 75-78) took 12th place and Matt Shen (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) (157, 78-79), who finished in a tie for 20th, were NYU's other scorers.

Overall, 42 golfers competed.

"Some of our guys started a bit shaky, but those who did turned it around and the guys who were consistent stayed poised," Kurtenbach added. "To come back and immediately fix it is great to see. Gives us a lot of confidence going into Saratoga next weekend."

The Violets will close out their fall season on Saturday and Sunday, October 12-13, when they compete in the Skidmore College Invitational at the Saratoga Springs National Golf Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.
