The New York University women's tennis team suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday, April 28 after falling to Brandeis University 6-3 on day two of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The sixth-seeded and 17th-ranked Violets dropped to 9-2 on the season, while the fifth-seeded and 21st-ranked Judges are now 11-7.
Despite getting swept in doubles, the Violets did come close to winning a couple of matches.
Vanessa Scott and
Flyora Shiyanova (#1) played well, but in the end couldn't overcome their opponents in an 8-6 loss.
Rupa Ganesh and
Judy Kam (#3) meanwhile, took their opponents to the absolute limit in a close 9-7 tiebreaker loss.
NYU did earn three wins in the singles round. At #1,
Anna Maria Buraya (#25 nationally) picked up the Violets' first win with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory. Immediately following her was
Coco Kulle (#43 nationally) at #2 where she held off several strong attempts from her opponent to hang on for a 6-3, 6-4 win. Shiyanova mounted a successful comeback at #3 in which she rebounded after getting swept 6-0 in the first set by narrowly edging out her opponent 6-4, 10-8 in the next two.
"It goes to show how strong the conference is with seven teams ranked in the top-21 in the nation," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "If you aren't playing your best, teams are going to take advantage of that."
The Violets will have one more chance to claim victory at the UAA Championship on Sunday, April 29, at 9:00 am when they face the eighth-seeded University of Rochester in the seventh-place match.
