The New York University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, April 27, after a 6-3 defeat to University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent University of Chicago in day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The Violets (9-1) went into the tournament as the sixth seed and #17 in the country, while the Maroons (16-3) were the third seed and #10 in the country.
"It was a tough loss," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "Chicago deserves credit. They were the better team today."
NYU got its lone doubles win from
Anna Maria Buraya and
Coco Kulle (#2). The pair continued their impressive play from the regular season and won 8-4.
At #1 singles, Buraya (#25 nationally) battled hard to win the first set in a tiebreaker and took that momentum into a dominant second set (7-6 (5), 6-1). That victory was followed by a solid performance from
Judy Kam at #6, where she won a back-and-forth match in a third-set tiebreaker [6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8)]. The Violets got close to another win at #2 when Kulle (#43 nationally) mounted a strong second set comeback, but ultimately fell short of victory in the third set [7-6 (6), 4-6, 1-0 (13-11)]
"In the UAA there is not a lot separating the teams," concluded Choy. "A game here or a point there can make all the difference."
The Violets will look to bounce back from the loss when they return to the courts at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 28, for day two of the UAA Championship. The Violets will face #7 Brandeis University.
