Men's Fencing Competes at Eric Sollee Invite

Violets Win Five of Six Matches

The New York University men's fencing team went 5-1 in dual meets at the Eirc Sollee MIT Invitational held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, on Sunday, February 5.

The Violets started out with wins over Haverford College (18-9), host MIT (20-7), and Brandeis University (19-8) before falling to Duke University (14-13) in a nail-biter. However, NYU bounced back from the loss and ended the afternoon with resounding victories over Brown University (22-5) and Boston College (20-7).

Leading the way for the Violets were Grant Williams and Mickey Bak. The sophomores went 11-1 and 10-2, respectively, on the day in sabre. Junior Hans Engel (13-4 in epee), junior Yash Srivastav (8-1 in foil) and sophomore Kyle Welsh (8-2 in foil) had strong showings for NYU, as well.

"We had a really strong day today," said NYU Assistant Coach Lauren Willock-Wunderlich. "The loss to Duke was disappointing, but we pulled it together and continued fighting."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshmen WIlliam Zhang (10-5) and Alexandre Crepeaux (10-8) each earned double-digit wins in epee.

- Freshman Eric Zobel went a perfect 4-0 on the day.

The Violets are back in action for the U.S. Junior Olympics Championships on Friday-Wednesday, February 10-15.
