Men's Swimming & Diving Opens Season

Violets Defeat Rowan 176.5-116.5

COMPLETE RESULTS

The New York University men's swimming & diving team opened up its 2017-18 season with a 176.5-116.5 victory over host Rowan University on Saturday, October 14, in Glassboro, NJ.

NYU won 10 of 16 events to coast to its first victory of the season.

"It was a good start to the year," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We had some competitive races and I was happy to see a strong showing from our freshmen and our returners."

Tim Kou continued his impressive NYU career with a pair of individual wins and a relay victory. The senior captain, who earned four All-America honors last season, won the 100-yard breaststroke (56.58) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:05.71), while helping lead the 200-yard medley squad (1:34.04), as well. Kou was joined on the 200-yard medley relay team by Chad Moody, Joe Del Buono and Joe Baron.

Ian Rainey also won a pair of events for the Violets, swimming to first place in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:39.15) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.12).

Connor Brisson swept the 1- and 3-meter dives, scoring 321.65 and 336.35, respectively.

"I was pleasantly surprised how we dove today," said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "We haven't practiced much yet, but Connor was impressive and had a qualifying zone score."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Carlos Colmenares won the 200-yard breaststroke, completing the race in 1:56.39.

- Nianzhong Liu, a junior transfer, competed in his first-ever meet as a Violet and won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51. Baron finished just behind him in 20.71

- Moody completed the 100-yard backstroke in 51.74 to pick up his first victory of the season.

"We know we have a lot of hard work ahead of us," added Miele. "But, we are definitely happy with the way we started the season."

The Violets return to the pool on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4, when they host the NYU Fall Invitational. Swimming begins at 5:00pm Friday evening.
