FULL RESULTSThe New York University men's fencing team competed at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Sunday, February 1, in Cambridge, MA. The Violets finished the day with a 5-1 record, their best finish at the event since 2008.
The Violets opened up the first round with a 21-6 victory over Haverford College. They followed that up with wins over host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (18-9) and Brandeis University (15-12). The Violets then lost to Duke University (14-13) and defeated Brown University 19-8.
NYU, now 9-9 this season, ended the competition on a high note by taking down Boston College 18-9.
"We fenced terrifically all day," said Head Coach
Steve Mormando. "Had we won one more bout in the Duke match, we would have gone undefeated against some very tough competition. I want to point out a great performance from freshman
Malcolm Lewis, who went 8-6 and anchored our epee squad."
Highlights:- The foil squad went 5-1 on the day, led by a pair of excellent performances from freshmen
Daniel Sconzo and
Philip Shin. Sconzo was 15-2 on the day while Shin finished 14-3.
- The epee team was also 5-1 on the day, led by
Hans Engel (12-4) and
John Cramerus (12-5).

Quinten Burgunder added a 13-3 record in sabre.
The Violets will be back on the strip in a tri-meet at 5pm on Tuesday, February 10, for Family Day at the Coles Sports Center.
