Men's Volleyball Wins on Senior Day

Violets Top Thiel in Straight Sets

The #15 New York Univesity men's volleyball team defeated Thiel College, 3-0, on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon, March 2, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The game scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-17.

The Violets (10-4) out-hit the Tomcats (9-9) .390 to .100, swinging especially effeciently in the third set. NYU had just one hitting error in the final game, registering 17 kills and a .762 hitting percentage.

"It was a very good performance," said NYU Head Coach Jose Pina. "We had a really nice offensive match, and we were able to execute the plays that we wanted to execute."

Four seniors -- Matthew Coghlan, Dylan Ramey, Connor Mortland, and Nick Capriccio -- were honored prior to first-serve.

"The seniors have been instrumental in the success of this team," said Pina. "They're sort of the keepers of tradition, and they pass on how I like the team to play to the other guys. As you can see from the crowd and the bench, they are all really loved. They all contributed a lot to today's victory."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Chase Klein led all players with 12 kills, had a match-high-tying eight digs and registered two blocks.

- Phil Bueno finished with 11 kills with an almost flawless .917 hitting percentage and no errors. The sophomore also had a match-high-tying four service aces.

- Colin LaPorte notched nine kills and no errors on a .750 hitting percentage.

- Mortland ended with a match-best 39 assists, five digs, two kills, and a service ace.

- Andrew Quick finished with a match-high-tying eight digs.

- David Lauer had seven kills, four digs and three blocks.

- Capriccio racked up four kills, while getting three blocks and two digs.

The Violets will be back in action for a neutral match against Domincan College (IL) on Tuesday, March 4 at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. NYU will then travel to Elmira, NY, for the second United Volleyball Conference (UVC) crossover on Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9.
