The New York University women's tennis team will head to the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship this weekend, which is being held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL, from Thursday, April 25, through Saturday, April 27.
NYU (5-3) enters the competition with five wins in its last six matches, including a current four-match winning streak.
Despite their strong play of late, the Violets find themselves as the #8 seed in the eight-team tournament. NYU begins play by taking on top-seeded Emory University (10-4) at 9:00am on Thursday.
Over the duration of the season, the Violets have entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women's Northeast Regional Rankings, where they currently find themselves #18 in the region.
NYU has been led in individual play by
Alison Wang at #2 singles and
Mari Tzakis at #3 singles. Tzakis leads the team in singles victories with a 13-3 record, while Wang is 12-2 overall.
Tzakis has also combined with
Madeline King to post an 11-4 record in #2 doubles, while Wang and
Ashley Masanto have gone 11-5 in #1 doubles.
This will mark the third consecutive season that NYU and Emory will meet in the opening round of the UAA Championship. Emory has won the previous two meetings, including a 7-0 victory last season.
"Emory isn't the ideal draw to begin the tournament, but the entire conference is very strong", said Head Coach
Horace Choy.
Also competing at the UAA Championships will be #2 Carnegie Mellon University, #3 Washington University, #4 University of Chicago, #5 Case Western Reserve University, #6 Brandeis University, and #7 University of Rochester.
